St Just Heritage Area Regeneration

Area Team: Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly

The St Just Heritage Area Regeneration project is one example of how investment from the South West RDA during the last year has helped boost the local economy.

The aim of the £3.9 million project was to refurbish and improve the safety of hazardous mining heritage sites, enhance the appearance of the area and help boost the local economy.

The South West RDA contributed £1.48 million to the project which saw a range of improvements in St Just, Pendeen and surrounding heritage sites bringing 11 hectares of brownfield land back into use.

The sensitive conservation of historically important mining features provided employment and skills training for local contractors and as a result a Traders Association was set up.

More importantly, St Just was one of ten mining heritage areas pinpointed as key sites for development in Cornwall's bid to gain World Heritage Site status, which was approved earlier this month.

The St Just Heritage Area Regeneration project helped demonstrate what all 10 bid areas could achieve in preserving Cornwall's mining heritage for future generations.
