Work has started on a multi-million pound package of measures to improve public areas of St Austell to complement the town centre regeneration scheme.
The £3.7 million Civic Pride scheme, being led by Restormel Borough Council, includes £2.1 million from the South West of England Regional Development Agency (RDA) and £1.25 million from the Objective One Programme for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Phase One will see improvements to footpaths, roadways, lighting, signage and landscaping to the area surrounding the Holy Trinity Church. The link to the railway and bus station will be vastly improved and the Biddicks Court area is to benefit from new paving and planting.
Where possible, the use of local materials such as granite will be used. We will also endeavour to use local labour which will help drive the town's economy.
Phase Two, to be funded by the South West RDA, will see improvements to High Cross Street and work is due to commence in 2008.
