Mission Statement:
The West of England Working Group for the 2012 Games will work with the South West Regional Team to create a united brand and coherent identity which will put the area on the map, both nationally and internationally, as a result of the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Philosophy:
The run up to 2012 offers a unique opportunity to generate long term benefits for all communities, sporting and cultural organisations and for business.
We possess strong public, private and voluntary sectors and have a demonstrable track record of effective partnership working which will be used to deliver a sustainable programme.
Actions:
1. Increased participation in sport improves health, reduces crime and improves community spirit:
We will promote the value of activity at all levels, through schools programmes, volunteer opportunities and cultural festivals and seek to do what is required to improve standards of sporting performance.
2. Enormous demand for goods and services will be generated by 2012.
We will ensure business is in the best position to take advantage of all the available opportunities.
3. People will be drawn from around the world to the Games.
We will develop an attractive portfolio drawing attention to the many attributes which make the West of England such a tremendous place to live, visit, work and do business and which offers the scope to stage major sporting, cultural and commercial events.
Working Group Members:
"We've got a great record in this area for producing top class sportsmen and women and we can boast a number of Olympians in a variety of sports. I have no doubt that some of the young people who are training today will play their part on the big stage when 2012 comes round.
But for me, the real benefit of the Games coming to Britain is the opportunity they bring for galvanising the whole country and generating long term benefits for local communities, sporting and cultural organisations and businesses."
Don Foster MP, Chair of the West of England Working Group for 2012 Games
Don Foster, the MP for Bath, chairs the group, which includes representatives of the Councils for Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, the Universities of Bristol and Bath, Business West and the West of England Sports Trust.
