What We Do

Low carbon economy

The RDA has decided to drive the transformation towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy in South West England.

RDA Corporate Outcomes:

  • South West England established as a leading international region for achieving economic growth within environmental limits.
  • Increased investment in measures that support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • Annual net zero carbon investment portfolio by 2013.
  • South West England established as a leading international region in the development and commercial application of environmental technologies.

South West Debates - EnergyWe intend to focus on four areas where we can make the most difference:

  • Resource efficiency - developing our regional lead role on the Business Resource Efficiency programmes, working closely with Business Link and national partners to deliver an enhanced business support service that is coordinated and mainstreamed
  • Energy - further development of a low carbon energy supply, focussing on renewable energy and low carbon technologies, and influencing the delivery of critical strategic projects and infrastructure in the region, thus contributing towards a low carbon economy and addressing the concerns of future energy security
  • Waste - helping to transform the waste sector from its traditional ways of working by supporting the development of waste recovery technologies and the growth of regional waste markets, and providing the bridge between the sector and strategic waste authorities to ensure sufficient infrastructure is delivered to deal with waste arising
  • Regional leadership - ensuring the region's transformation to a low carbon, resource efficient economy by investing in an innovative research programme to explore how the region must adapt in the face of climate change, and to assess the options and critical path for the region to meet the UK's 15% renewable energy target by 2020, and potential new carbon reduction target of 80% by 2050.
