Between 1971 and 2005, the South West's population increased by 23% to its current level of 5 million. Projections suggest that growth will continue, resulting in 6 million people living in the region by 2028 - one in four of whom will be over 65. 
 
People are attracted to the South West for many reasons, not least because we enjoy the highest quality of life of any English region. As our population grows, ages and diversifies, its needs will change and we must ensure that the region continues to provide a high quality of life. We must ensure we provide quality employment, that we manage growth in a sustainable way and that we celebrate and learn from our diverse cultural and racial mix.
