Winkleigh Biomass

Introduction

The South West RDA published a series of reports on the proposed biomass plant at Winkleigh, North Devon.

The reports are:

Claire Gibson, then Head of Planning, Transport and Environment at the South West RDA, said: "We funded these studies to better inform our consideration of the proposal but also to ensure as many people as possible could have access to the findings. The reports will have implications for other projects in the region and further afield.

"By law we have to be consulted about renewable energy projects of this scale, so we need to have as many facts as possible in order to give a considered view to the local planning authority as to how the proposal helps to deliver the Regional Economic Strategy, which places the environment and environmental technologies as key drivers of the South West economy."

"Additionally, we wanted to place the reports on our website so the local community could use the factual information to help them respond to Peninsula Power's planning application."

The South West RDA, in the role as a statutory consultee, was consulted by Torridge District Council on the planning application for the biomass electricity generator at Winkleigh. The RDA responded and our response can be viewed by clicking on the link below. This response was submitted to Torridge District Council on 20 December 2004.

The response has been made available on this website in response to requests from the local community to be kept advised of the views and involvement of the South West RDA in relation to the project. The publication of the response completes the wider information also available on this website, where the South West RDA has had an involvement in the project.
