London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games
Team South West is a partnership, led by the South West RDA,
which aims to make the most of the business, sporting,
cultural and social opportunities of the London 2012 Olympic and
Paralympic Games. Its objective is to deliver a lasting
legacy now and for future generations throughout the region.
With the huge interest they attract, the 2012 Games represent
the most significant opportunity in our lifetime to build on the
strengths of the South West. We can develop the economy,
involve communities, increase sports participation and inspire
young people to believe in the power of the Olympic ethos ‘to be
the best they can be’.
The main sectors set to benefit from the games are:
Business
Delivering the 2012 Games will require the procurement of goods,
works and services from an enormous range of firms. With more
than 75,000 contracts up for grabs, worth more than £6billion and
available across every aspect of the event, South West businesses
have a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Tourism
The South West is the jewel in the crown of the UK’s tourism
industry, attracting more than 26 million visitors each year. The
2012 Games will provide a global showcase for the region’s
spectacular scenery and stunning destinations, attracting
significantly more visitors during the Games and for many years to
come.
Sport
The 2012 Games will motivate thousands of people of all ages to
engage in sporting events across the region. With a multitude of
inspiring elite athletes, emerging talent and some of the greatest
sporting venues and international events in the UK, the run-up to
the Games will see a plethora of
sporting activities and events taking place across the South
West.
Culture
We want the 2012 Games to widen the experience beyond sport to
enable whole communities to share in the magic of having the
Olympic and Paralympic Games in their own country. As a
consequence there will be a full programme of cultural events
across the South West to inspire and engage everyone in the lead-up
to the Games.
