Enterprising Britain - 2009 winner
Plymouth were crowned champions in the 2009 regional heat of the
Enterprising Britain competition, for the second consecutive
year.
Led by the University of Plymouth, a partnership of
organisations were commended for their response to the challenge of
promoting enterprise, the originality and innovation in their
overall approach, and for including measures to link education
establishments and business/enterprise initiatives
A Plymouth delegation, joined by Andy Youl – Employment and
Skills Officer, attended the national awards ceremony which is the
culmination of the annual competition. Taking place in London, the
awards saw the Plymouth delegation (Caroline Chipperfield -
University of Plymouth, Tracy Wilson - University of Plymouth,
Andrew Ashley - Enterprise Plymouth Ltd, Rupert Owen - Plymouth
City Council) collect the award for being named the most
enterprising place in the South West. The award was collected from
Peter Jones (Dragons’ Den and chair of Enterprise UK) and Lord
Davies (then Minister for Trade, Investment and Small
Business).
The city was ultimately beaten to the national award by
Lowestoft. Undeterred, the Plymouth delegation resolved to take the
top spot at some point in the future.
