Social enterprise
A social enterprise is a business with primarily social
objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested back into the
business or the wider community, rather than being driven by the
need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners. Social
enterprises are profit making businesses in their own right.
Distribution of profits differs from other businesses in that they
are re-invested for the benefit of social, environmental and
community needs.
Social enterprises have the potential to transform communities.
As sustainable businesses with a mission for community benefit
rather than private profit they make a major contribution to a
stronger local economy and a fairer society.
